Lars von Trier returns home
For the first time since DANCER IN THE DARK (2000), Lars von Trier is shooting an international film in Denmark. Copenhagen Film Fund has contributed with 1.08 million Euros to help make it possible for Zentropa to shoot in Copenhagen.

CEO of Copenhagen Film Fund, Thomas Gammeltoft states:

“Copenhagen Film Fund is incredibly proud that Lars von Trier will be shooting parts of his upcoming feature in Copenhagen, Denmark after shooting abroad for years. Besides that, it is always exciting to see that Lars is able to attract high profile actors from all around the world, who all see it as an opportunity to grow and a privilege to work closely with him. We will do our best to make sure they have an amazing stay in Copenhagen and we are most proud to be able to contribute to the making of this major international feature”.

Riley Keough
Riley Keough has been in the spotlight in Hollywood for some time. Her acting career has evolved quickly and most recently she was nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in Steven Sotherbergh’s tv-series, THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE (2016). Furthermore, she starred in the major box office smash, MAD MAX: FURY ROAD (2015), which won 6 Oscars in 2016.

Her prior feature films include, AMERICAN HONEY, starring Shia LaBeouf from 2016; MAGIC MIKE (2012) where she appeared alongside Channing Tatum and Matthew McConaughey; THE RUNAWAYS (2010) with Kristin Steward and Dakota Fanning.

Sofie Gråbøl
Highly acclaimed Danish actress Sofie Gråbøl made her international breakthrough in the role as detective Sarah Lund in the tv-series THE KILLING (2012), which earned her a BAFTA award for Best Actress and a nomination for Best Actress at the Emmy Awards. Gråbøl is a major factor in the international Nordic Noir success. In 2015 she played the lead in British tv-series FORTITUDE and her most recent feature, the Zentropa produced, THE DAY WILL COME (2016) secured her a Robert Award for Best Supporting Actress last week. THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT marks her first role in a Lars von Trier film.

THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT takes place in 1970s USA. We follow the highly intelligent Jack through 5 incidents and are introduced to the murders that define Jack’s development as a serial killer. We experience the story from Jack’s point of view. He views each murder as an artwork in itself, even though his dysfunction gives him problems in the outside world. Despite the fact that the final and inevitable police intervention is drawing ever near (which both provokes and puts pressure on Jack) he is – contrary to all logic – set on taking greater and greater chances. Along the way we experience Jack’s descriptions of his personal condition, problems and thoughts through a recurring conversation with the unknown Verge – a grotesque mixture of sophistry mixed with an almost childlike self-pity and in-depth explanations of, for Jack, dangerous and difficult manoeuvres.

The film is produced by Louise Vesth for Zentropa Group in co-production with Film i Väst, Copenhagen Film Fund, Slot Machine, with support from Danish Film Institute, Swedish Film Institute, Nordisk Film & TV Fond, CNC, Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, Eurimages, The Media Programme of the European Union, and in cooperation with DR, Nordisk Film Distribution, Concorde Filmverleih, Potemkine, Les Films du Losange, SVT.

Nordic distribution through Nordisk Film. TrustNordisk handles international sales.
