Clara, a beautiful single mother, living on the edge of poverty, has learned to be clever and inventive in order to give her two sons the very best. Jack, a former prisoner, now manager of Kindness of Strangers, has cut himself off from all meaningful human interaction. Alice is a courageous emergency room nurse, who has yet to get used to the sight of blood and who has found her calling as the head of a Quality‐of-Life self-help group. Jeff has gotten and lost eight jobs over the last year and has neither much luck nor much talent to work with. These four people flow in and out of each other’s lives.
