CO-PRODUCTION BASICALLY ‘MADE ME’.

I put myself on the map as a producer with ’300 Miles to Heaven’ (1989), a Danish/Polish/French co-production, which won a lot of international awards a.o. Cannes junior. Numerous co-operations across the borders has since followed – both fiction and documentary.  Co-productions are artistically rewarding and developing, they are businesswise sensible and inspiring, and they are a necessity.

Financing of films have grown ever more complicated and fragmented, and it is not unusual in my field to have upwards of 25-30 financiers on a single film. This requires meeting and combining a wealth of different demands and regulations from various financiers – without jeopardizing the artistic integrity of the film. It is a gigantic juggling act. Danish film producers have been very good at exhausting international opportunities and have brought home more financing than vice versa, which is a contributing factor to the awareness in the international community of Danish films.  To ensure that this is also possible in the future, it is extremely important that we have something to offer foreign filmmakers, that makes us competitive.  The business is very professional, but we are not all that competitive with regards to salaries and prices if you compare to e.g. Southern and Eastern Europe, so attractive funding opportunities with a minimum of bureaucracy attached is a priceless factor in the bigger balance.

In this respect Copenhagen Film Fund – with something valuable to offer to the international community, which as the same time creates growth and turnover in the region and cooperation opportunities  for Danish producers – is a fantastic initiative. That is why I support the fund – together with a number of other documentary producers.  What Magic Hour Films can offer international partners is co-production and consultancy on both fiction and documentary, based on 35 years of experience and a very extensive network both domestically and abroad.
